Case Studies
We understand that companies are looking for new ways to control costs and operate more efficiently. The average corporate spend on printed material runs anywhere from 1% to 4% of total revenue. Yet print is still an often-overlooked category. CIO magazine cites print as "the last bastion of cost savings."

Health Care Company Reduces Costs Through Efficiencies
McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions, a division of McKesson Corporation ranked 18th on the Fortune 500 List, delivers programs to enable and educate patients to initiate and stay on prescription therapy. Their programs typically contain a large amount of printed materials, including complex kitting, fulfillment and data management.
They were staffed internally to manage their print purchasing with a handful of suppliers producing their work. McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions was interested in securing best-in-class pricing and project turnaround times, unprecedented quality and creating teamwork and solid communication with their product managers to enable them to deliver a great customer experience.
InnerWorkings provided on-site production managers to handle McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions' print services. Armed with the "Supplier Selection" module of PPM4, InnerWorkings proprietary technology, the production managers were able to provide McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions with the data necessary to select the best supplier to produce their work according to not only the supplier's equipment and ability to handle multi-component projects, but also eight key performance indicators InnerWorkings uses to rate its thousands of suppliers. With the on-site InnerWorkings production managers and PPM4, McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions also benefitted because their projects were scheduled when their suppliers had excess capacity therefore receiving better pricing.
InnerWorkings has been able to generate realizable and meaningful efficiencies for McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions in excess of 30 percent. Much of this savings has come from having InnerWorkings on-site production managers who can procure the print components separately and supply the components to fulfillment suppliers for final assembly and release. Additional savings were realized when McKesson Patient Relationship Solutions was able to redirect their internal resources upstream to better support and promote their core business. This elevated the level of customer service and communication with their key customer stakeholders.
Fortune 500 Retailer Find Savings Through Communications
A highly-recognizable retailer, spending more than $13 million a year in store signage and direct marketing asked InnerWorkings to help them create a means for storing valuable transaction and pricing information and sharing common, standard templates for project work.
The company's pool of suppliers was surprisingly limited making it nearly impossible to receive competitive print procurement. Moreover, the company was experiencing a disconnect between its internal design staff and print procurement managers due to the sheer volume of ongoing projects for multiple locations.
InnerWorkings brought in a trained, highly-qualified, on-site account manager, production expeditor, and multiple print production managers to deliver on a guaranteed savings promise. This team coupled with our proprietary PPM4™ technology helped unify the company's print efforts for increased efficiency, reduced printing costs and simplified project development enabling better communication between departments. In the end, the company was able to centralize print spend, create accurate reports and forecasts and reduce overhead based on process and product design efficiencies.
Large U.S. Facilities Services Company Finds Savings at the Center
A large residential and commercial facilities services company spending more than $62 million a year on direct mail and marketing print costs asked InnerWorkings to help decrease their printing costs and centralize their print management process. In the end, the company wanted a more transparent view of their print spend coupled with greater efficiency.
The company had a highly-decentralized print procurement process, with different member firms and divisions making large print purchases using a limited pool of suppliers. There was no way for them to ensure a competitive environment to accomplish their printing goals.
Relying on a combination of InnerWorkings' PPM4™ print management application and the solid expertise of our on-site print procurement and account managers, InnerWorkings implemented an enterprise print management solution. We helped the company experience an increase in savings by providing the data to assist in their understanding of their true costs of printed products. With this information, they were able to continue to use their preferred suppliers at markedly reduced rates and restructure their staff to increase their process efficiency. More importantly, InnerWorkings technology has allowed the company access to live reports on print jobs for accurate budgeting and financial forecasting across the organization meeting their initial needs of transparency and efficiency.
Global Equipment Manufacturer Finds Its Focus
An industry-leading, large equipment manufacturer with gross revenues of over $20 billion a year, including $30 million in annual print spend on indirect marketing, sought out the help of InnerWorkings for it's print procurement and management needs.
The company faced many challenges with its old process, including that its print efforts had involved a disparate set of highly-decentralized suppliers, relying on a static set of pricing information to make high-volume print purchasing decisions. The print procurement process lacked real-time, ongoing visibility and reporting capabilities across product types and business units. Due to lack of aggregated supplier data, the client was unable to identify possible opportunities for optimized printing and process efficiencies.
To help the company become more profitable and alleviate the challenges it was facing, InnerWorkings implemented its PPM4™ technology solution and brought on an on-site account management and deployment team, working closely with company stakeholders to understand their needs and ensure the new print procurement process was aligned with corporate strategy. InnerWorkings developed a competitive bidding environment for the company's products, giving them increased leverage, as well as access to quality-approved print suppliers through aggregation of their significant print spend.
InnerWorkings has helped thousands of companies reduce their commercial print and promotional products costs without compromising quality.
